Bayonne Bridge

This bridge was built between 1928 and 1931 by O.H. Ammann and the architect Cass, in order to join Staten Island to the mainland. It is 1763 m long and 22,57 m wide. .

It is a double-hinged arch span, which is 510,55 m long and 83,57 m high. It had been the longest in the world until the New River Gorge Bridge. The span is 45 m above sea level. Ammann chose this type of bridge rather than a suspension bridge, because the anchorage would have been too expensive to excavate from the dense bedrock on both shores. It is the first time that High-strength alloy steel was used for ribs and rivets.
