Plénière Science et Technique du Génie Civil 2007

PRESENTATION

All videos have been produced in French.

On December 18, 2007, in partnership with the Paris Chamber of Commerce and Industry, LCPC organised an event intended to provide a clearer understanding of the Laboratory's scope of activities to its full range of partners (oversight agencies, local and regional authorities, construction firms, engineering consultants, journalists, etc.).
This special event offered the opportunity to inform a large, diverse audience about LCPC's key research accomplishments in the area of civil engineering and relevant applications, along with the primary issues being raised for the near future. This gathering served to wrap up a series of technical plenary sessions organised during 2007 on specific topics (i.e. Roads, Structures, Acoustics, Water and the Environment, Geotechnical Engineering and Engineering Sciences).
Four major themes were discussed:

  • Natural hazards and expert evaluations, through a summary of research work undertaken on rockslide problems affecting Reunion Island's RN1 coastal highway;
  • Innovation and major technological challenges in civil engineering structures, with a description of the various in-house projects on construction of the Rion-Antirion Bridge in Greece;
  • Road safety from the standpoint of the relation between infrastructure and vehicle, and more specifically the research initiatives on both skid resistance and road visibility;
  • Non-renewable resource conservation and sustainable development in infrastructure design, with projects focusing on environmental assessments and pavement recycling potential.
At the conclusion of these remarks, M. Erik Orsenna, writer and member of the Académie Française Literary Society, pronounced the "need for science" doctrine tied to the evolution of research and technical achievements in contemporary society.
