The use of BHP or BTHP concrete has necessitated the development of a compression failure testing method of a cylindrical test specimen in which the force is exerted on sand layers confined in two steel caskets. This device, compliant with NF EN 12390-3 Appendix A5 , allows the test to be prepared by fitting sand-filled caskets at the extremities of a concrete test specimen, while ensuring squareness between cylinder generatrixes and casket bearing faces, as well as even distribution and homogenization of the sand in the caskets by vibrating process.
As standard, for test specimens size 160 x 320 mm, the equipment consists of:
- a frame incorporating a console equipped with rollers on which the test specimen is centered; in addition, the test specimen is held in position by an elastic strap;
- a pneumatically operated vibrating machine, placed under the frame. A pressure reducer and a pneumatic switch ensure control of the vibrating machine;
- a pair of caskets, to cover the test specimen size 160 x 320 mm.

The test specimen and casket assembly requires the use of a press featuring a minimum spacing distance of 335 mm between platens.
